How to choose the right work van

Roof height. A high roof lets most people stand up inside, which matters if you're in and out of the van all day. A low or medium roof fits in more parking garages and drive-thrus.

Length and wheelbase. Measure the longest thing you carry, like ladders, pipe or racks, and pick a length that fits it with room to spare. Longer vans carry more but are harder to park in tight LA streets.

Payload. A 250 or 2500 handles most trades. If you haul heavy tools, tile, equipment or a full shelving system, look at a 350 or 3500.

Gas or diesel. Gas vans cost less to buy and maintain for local work. Diesel Sprinters are popular for high-mileage routes.

Upfit. Shelving, ladder racks, partitions and ramps add cost if you buy them separately, so a van that's already upfitted for your trade can save time and money.
